Skylla
Skylla is a beautiful nymph with six heads and is the daughter of the goddess Hekate, who was Zeus’s favourite goddess and she assisted Zeus in the war against the titans and her father was the pre titan god Phorkys, the son of Pontus (sea) and Ge (earth).
Any sailor that lies eyes upon her cannot help but fall deeply in love with her, but do not let her beauty trick you. She is a man-eating monster from Greek mythology, with six tentacles and three rows of razor-sharp teeth. She lives opposite her brother Charybdis at the end of a narrow channel of water off the coastal town of Messina separating Italy from Sicily. The two sides of the strait are within an arrow’s range of each other. They are so close that sailors attempting to avoid the whirlpools of Charybdis would pass dangerously close to Skylla. Skylla would then wrap her tentacles around them and drown them. When trying to avoid Skylla men get sucked into Charybdis’s whirlpools never to be seen again.
Skylla was a former lover of the sea god Poseidon, but once Poseidon’s wife Amphitrite become jealous of their love, she poisoned Skylla with bath salts. This turned the once beautiful Skylla into a monster and she only looks beautiful to men’s eyes. When any ship comes close to her, she will grab hold of up to six sailors and drown them all, but the other sailors if there were any left them go free.
You have all heard of the saying “between a rock and a hard place” right? Well, the original saying from ancient Greek was “between Skylla and Charybdis”. Which one will you choose?
